We didn’t know.
We didn’t know you were hurting
Or that you took care of us before yourself
We didn’t know how much you meant to us
Or that you needed help.
Maybe it was because you never asked us
Certainly not because we didn’t care
But maybe because you covered it With your quick wit, and peculiar stare.
We didn’t know how much you needed hope
Or that you couldn’t find it on your own
We didn’t know you were breaking
Or realize how you thought you were alone
What we do know were the things you taught us
About how box jellyfish are shaped like a box
How much you liked root beer Or how to drive a bass pumping car
We do know how much you loved gumpy
And how much you loved your brothers
We know about your weekly adventures
And how much you loved your mother
We can’t imagine how hard it will be going on
But we know you are happier
We will not remember you for how you died
We will remember you for how you touched our hearts
And I can say as someone who knew you a while ago
That you affected me greatly
And for that I will always remember you.
