After the San Bernardino Mass Shooting, that left 14 dead, an Apple Iphone was recovered from one of the dead shooters. The Iphone has a 4 digit passcode to access the information that only the dead shooter knows. Recently, a California magistrate ordered Apple to provide the FBI with technical assistance to break into the locked Iphone. However, Apple has stepped up the encryption game. Apple made it so that only the owner can view what is on their phone. Apple believes that privacy and security is needed to keep confidence in the world of technology. As of now, Apple refuses to provide assistance in breaking into the phone. Tim Cook states that breaking into this phone is “an unprecedented step which threatens the security of our customers.” Many advocates of privacy agree and believe this could lead to a new age of digital surveillance. This case perfectly shows that technology is advancing faster than laws can be created for them.
