Music education has been dwindling in popularity over the years. Many people think that it is not as necessary as some other classes like Math, Science, and English. Many studies have been conducted which provide proof that music education is very important for middle and high school kids. Studies show that kids who have had music education receive higher grades on standardized tests and usually have higher GPA’s than those who have not received any music education. Music is another language. It has its own letters and sentences which compile into one beautiful piece of music. In return, understanding music helps with language and reading skills. Kids with music experience are more tolerant to reading and understanding new things because reading music is always a new experience. Music helps with more than just academic aspects of people. Kids who have taken music classes are often more disciplined, show excellent work ethic, and are also least likely to use alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs. Students learn important social, emotional, and problem-solving skills which help in everyday life. However, the facts are not enough to keep some schools to drop these classes. Music classes usually receive the least amount of money from the school and are the first to be dropped from schools due to budget cuts. Personally I think music education is very important. I have been involved with band classes for over 6 years now and have cherished every moment of it. I have personally seen improvement in my schooling thanks to the knowledge from my music classes. I have also seen improvement in many of the life skill that were previously mentioned. I think the reason a lot of music programs are doing so well is because of the community, many schools do not have a supportive community or the resources to provide a music program. I agree that other subject classes are important, but those mean nothing if we don’t have our creativity and imagination.
