The Republican Texas Legislature has passed a law where students over 21 will be allowed to carry a concealed weapon while on campus and in the classroom. Many people argue with this, because it can go both ways. It can either really help with people feeling safe on campus or make it easier for people to commit mass shootings in the classrooms. Over 280 professors at the University of Texas at Austin have signed a petition to get rid of the law, they saw that it is a “direct assault on our free speech rights”. And they’re not the only ones doing this, Colorado, Kansas, Mississippi, Idaho, Utah, Wisconsin, and Oregon allow firearms at schools in the state. Classes are already tense when certain subjects are raised which some things questioned in the classroom could cause violence. I think that the colleges should not allow students to carry concealed firearms in the classroom. The reason being is that some people have mental issues that we don’t know about which can cause them to break and cause chaos on campus. There's too big of a risk with allowing students to carry firearms. If anything colleges should hire more for security on campus which would make it a much safer and allow students to feel protected while on campus. The students safety is the biggest thing in college and I believe that this law will not help bring more safety to schools.
